The Robotanists come to the top of the playlist with a great deal of energy. Typically their songs start off slow but erupt into a massive amount of sound right around the first chorus. Sarah Elquist brings the energy and has the raw talent behind it.  She has front-woman presence of Shirley Manson and the group backs her up with phenomenal precision.   They have been touring hard over the past year and have a few shows left before they break, so if you are out in California track them down.  For the rest of us, we will just have to listen to the recordings.

You likely recognize Adam Goldberg from Saving Private Ryan or his iconic role in Dazed and Confused, but today you hear a more musical side of him.  The Goldberg Sisters grew out of the band LANDy that changed their name due to the confusion of other products with the same name.  “Shush” is the single off of the 2011 album and changes pace a few times during its 4 minute run.  It starts off slow with a little electronic ditty, but breaks into a guitar filled song which is interrupted by screams at the pinacle of the song.

The Deadstring Brothers bringa gritty bluegrass tone to the playlist.  The Detroit group brings an upbeat tempo with some great harmonica work.  Kurt Marschke is the frontman and a big part of the genius for the group.  His voice reminds me of J.J. Grey from Mofro and that puts him in some elite company.

Radical Dads is a modern indie super band, but without the star power of the Traveling Wilburys.  Take some Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and mix in a bit of Uninhabitable Mansions and you get the Radical Dads.  These fine folks from Brooklyn put together some great trippy indie rock with a bit of 90′ flair, which I guess counts as old school nowadays.  Enjoy the playlist along side of your Christmas hangover.

Playlist for Christmas Eve

With Christmas rapidly approaching, Tomorrow’s Playlist was looking to bring you some holiday cheer.  Too bad we came across a bit of a melancholy song  by The Davenports that just needed to kick off the holiday playlist.  If you don’t really pay attention to the revenge tones of the lyrics, you would never know that this isn’t a regular holiday tune.  The Davenports put out a great bit of pop punk music, so look past the novelty that comes with this song and go see them out when they come play in your home town.  Check them out while you sip eggnog from moose shaped glasses and try to hide from the camera as you have your matching holiday sweaters.
  1. The Davenports – Whore for the Holidays
  2. The Kinks – Father Christmas
  3. Sufjan Stevens – Put the Lights On the Tree
  4. James Brown – Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto
  5. Blues Traveler – Christmas

The See See bring a surf feel to the playlist today. The laid back voice, the slow lead guitar and steady rhythms add to that vibe, but this is no California garage band. The four members each call a different country home and came together to produce some great music. They have been selling 7″s like crazy and are starting to open for some big bands. These up-and-comers are going to be a household name soon, and you can say you heard them here.

  2. El Goodo – Talking To The birds
  3. The Humms – Don’t Think About Death

Elephant Stone tops the play list today and they bring a sitar and and a noisy wall of psychedelic sound with them.  The non-traditional instruments give them a sound to help differentiate themselves from the indie crowd.  They have their roots set in the 70’s but they really bring the modern sound with them.  Rishi Dihr is the man behind the band and his vocals remind me of a bit of a manly Jefferson Airplane.  Overall, they are worth a listen, so click the link.

Speak is a band, like many others, that calls Austin their home, but their sound stands out from the crowd.  The guitars are big and the bass lines are danceable.  They sound a bit like a young Franz Ferdinand which seems to be one of their influences.  Overall, Speak is a great band that put together a great little album.  Enjoy them here first.

Roadside Graves is a morbid name for a band, but if you can look past that you will get to hear some sweet tunes.  As they pound the ivories in a honky tonk fashion and belt out lyrics in a fashion you would hear from a young Bob Dylan, you will be captivated by the changing tempos and subtle background sounds of their songs.  These fellow Jersey boys will hopefully bring a better name to the state than MTV has.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. has such an ironic name you can’t help but be intrigued by them.  Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott make up the Detroit based band and makes the catchy song that kicks off the playlist.  They have a great approach to electronic arranging and the catchy beats will have you tapping your toes in no time.
