If you take great bluesy guitar and overdrive it to near metal levels, then layer it with sweet voice that has a Lily Allen-esque quality you get The Wet Darlings.  You will not hear the over driven guitars as they open the playlist, but they are evident in the rest of the album.  The match up works and it becomes a really fun combo. The Wet Darlings shake up the indie rock world by providing a vocal melody that seems to be few and far between in today’s scene.  Enjoy!

I first noticed this band when they followed me on Twitter a few days ago and I figured I needed to broadcast them out to my merry band of followers.  Rogue Valley produces some fantastic music.  The mellow sounds are complicated and just plain well written.  They have been producing albums that are meant to replicate the changing seasons, and as you listen to them you can feel it.  I am glad they followed me because we have a gem here.

I first heard Reptar as I was plowing through the early time slots of the Lollapalooza schedule.  Once I heard the “Blastoff” I knew it was worth getting there early and fighting the crowds.  The Georgia based band put on a fantastic show and the 5 track EP they have has been on heavy rotation ever since.  Try it, you’ll like it.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, is both a statement and a band name.  The track on the playlist will catch your ear with a ditty that sounds like it was pulled straight from NES, but it leads into a really catchy indie pop track.  The mellow lyrics contrast the campy nature of the tune and form a solid musical backing for the subdued vocals.  They also have a really cool moniker.

The Fair Ohs always make me feel young again and like it is summer time outside.  Their songs are slightly addictive and can get tuck in your head quite easily. My favorite form the album kicks off the playlist today.  Enjoy a left over turkey sandwich and get ready to tap your feet.

The Wave Pictures intertwine a jazzy sounding guitar with bluegrass like licks.    The sounds results in fast guitar playing over slow and steady drums that still fit very well together.  The trio have been playing together for quite some time now but mainly stayed across the pond.  As they start to invade The States, keep an eye out for them at a venue near you.

The name Dr. Dog tends to confuse a lot of people and it personally made me think they were some kind of hip-hop artist.  They aren’t.  Instead if you look pass the moniker, you will find an awesome band that frankly sounds like The Band.  The eclectic sound of Dr. Dog ranges from folk to indie rock and each album they produce seems to be a bit better than the last.  Be sure to check them sure to check them out if they come to a venue near you since they put on an awesome show.  Till then, check out Tomorrow’s Playlist with the track that kicks off their latest album.

The singer songwriter Rickolus will kick you off to the weekend.  The poetry of his lyrics remind me of a young Bob Dylan and the guitar it is sung over is not far off.  Rickolus has been the front man of bands like The Julius Airwave in the past, but I think this album shows he can hold his own without a problem.

Ben Sollee is hands down the coolest cellist I have ever listened to and Yo Yo Ma can eat his heart out.  On the Playlist today he appears on two tracks, one from his latest solo album and another as part of The Sparrow Quartet (with Bela Fleck, Abigail Washburn and Casey Driessen).   He is a master of the strings and sings with a Jack Johnson type sound that appeals to a broad crowd.  Enjoy the tracks and get out and see him.
