Playlist for 1/17/2012

The Robotanists come to the top of the playlist with a great deal of energy. Typically their songs start off slow but erupt into a massive amount of sound right around the first chorus. Sarah Elquist brings the energy and has the raw talent behind it.  She has front-woman presence of Shirley Manson and the group backs her up with phenomenal precision.   They have been touring hard over the past year and have a few shows left before they break, so if you are out in California track them down.  For the rest of us, we will just have to listen to the recordings.

You likely recognize Adam Goldberg from Saving Private Ryan or his iconic role in Dazed and Confused, but today you hear a more musical side of him.  The Goldberg Sisters grew out of the band LANDy that changed their name due to the confusion of other products with the same name.  “Shush” is the single off of the 2011 album and changes pace a few times during its 4 minute run.  It starts off slow with a little electronic ditty, but breaks into a guitar filled song which is interrupted by screams at the pinacle of the song.

Solander comes from Sweden to bring us a heavy bass pedal, fantastic rhythm percussion and a voice that reminds me of a modern day Jefferson Airplane.  The trio uses a variety of orchestral instruments to add to the drama of the sound.  Throughout the album you will hear sounds that originate from all over the place.  Things like old music boxes and antiquated organs surprise you at times and will keep your ears sharp.

papercranes was created by Rain Phoenix and have been famous in the Gainesville area for quite sometime before they took the trek out to LA.  The band puts together great non-traditional music that breaks the norms and becomes a free flowing entity.   In the playlist you will hear sounds briefly enter the song never to come back, backing vocals that come and go but Rain pulls the whole thing together with a steady lyrical flow.  Take a listen and hear for yourself.

Sometimes you come across bands that produce good music, but something is missing.  Normally the piece that is missing is chemistry and that comes from manufactured bands that treat it more as a job than a hobby.  Canon Logic were friends before they became a band and moved into heart of hipsters, Brooklyn.   The indie rock ensemble puts out sound with heavy rhythm that makes it danceable.   “Howl in the Night” is their single off of their latest EP Rapid Empire. Take a listen because I am sure you will be hearing more of them in years to come.

Gary Clark Jr. is on a different level of guitar than others making music today. His dirty blues sound makes me think of Hendrix and his gritty voice keeps me on the same vein. He sings while he plays rhythm and breaks out in to mind melting solos that will leave you open mouthed. He is also on the list Coachella so check that out too. So on this playlist, you will see a bunch of great guitarists that he plays like. You may not have heard of Black Joe Lewis but Gary and Joe produce a lot of similar sounds.

Coachella Complete Playlist for 2012

Coachella is pulling off an amazing feat by repeating the festival two weekends in a row.  The annual festival, held in Indio, California, will happen on April 13-15 and April 20-22.  There are over 130 bands playing from all edges of the musical world.  The Black Keys, Radiohead and Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg headline, but we all know that headliners are only icing on the festival cake.  The best bands play early and this is when you get to see them before everybody else.

Playlist for 1/10/2012

Redbird is a fine folk band that puts out really great music.  They have bluesy licks that make them different than the average and they can reproduce it on their live album, which isn’t always the case in the ProTools era.  The smokey voice of Savannah Leigh Wellman generally leads the band and  that voice rivals some of the pop singers you are hearing today and I would put her right up there with Adele or Florence Welch.  Do not be fooled by the live album Spotify has linked to this band (as we were), this is the Redbird from the EP: We’re All Friends and Lovers Until It Falls Apart.

The Deadstring Brothers bringa gritty bluegrass tone to the playlist.  The Detroit group brings an upbeat tempo with some great harmonica work.  Kurt Marschke is the frontman and a big part of the genius for the group.  His voice reminds me of J.J. Grey from Mofro and that puts him in some elite company.
